Hey friends. Thank you for joining me today returning to my conversation with the indefatigable Dr. Michael Geci, a New York ER doctor for the past 25 or 30 years. He’s really a political activist, the author of a wonderful book that everybody ought to read. He tells a story of getting his heart broken in cannabis, and a lot of other really interesting things that turned him into the political activist he is today, really. Pot Doc, A Physician’s Search for the Holy Grail of Medical Marijuana. That’s the name and tag of his book, but I leave a link in the show notes for you. So jump on into the sandbar of cannabis with Dr. Michael Geci right after the intro.

Welcome to season three of the Cannaba Verum podcast, the cannabis truth podcast. I speak the language of cannabis freely and uncensored while educating my audience on safe use of this live plant therapy. You should know what’s in your cannabis. What’s good and what’s not. It does not come with an FDA stamp of approval yet.
Using cannabis mindfully as medication is a different concept in Western healthcare philosophy, specifically the past 100 years. There’s a lot to learn and reconsider. The information you’ll find here comes straight from the scientists and clinicians doing the work and reporting their findings in real time through various live online outlets. The scientific truth of cannabis is finally getting out and is wide open for all to see at respected medical sites like www.pubmed.gov and JAMA, the Journal of American Medical Association (jamanetwork.com).
I’m right there in the thick of it with all those titans of medicine as a fly on the wall. Because I’m not a doctor. I didn’t go to med school. I did take dozens of private cannabis courses offered by cannabis expert scientists online over the past few years and slowly began to see and understand the bigger picture.
Well, I can talk to people all day long about cannabis… and hopefully inspire them to research the facts as we know them today.
Cannabis is an amazing alternative in health remedies that can reportedly alleviate typical disease problems and troubling side effects caused by synthetic prescriptions. This is Honey Smith Walls, a 21st century cannabis shaman… not a doctor… not a scientist. Raised by nuns and wolves in the verdant cattle pastures of the Oklahoma oil fields. I’m here to amplify the truth of this great big story and language of cannabis in historical, political and scientific terms… so you can make educated decisions about the medicine you choose to ingest.

Dr. Michael Geci 3:11
I just wrote an article for this publication that I write for. The title of the article was the cannabis industry is basically built on a sandbar. We’re in the second year of the Biden administration and we’re really we’re no further along in terms of good cannabis policy than we were before. I mean, the More Act passed the house but I mean it won’t go anywhere.
Honey Smith Walls 4:01
McConnell’s not going to do a damn thing about it. He’s not. Because he wants to control the whole, the whole content of that and it’s just gonna die. Down here in Florida…. They’re trying to shoot Mickey and tax all of the people down here because Mickey has an opinion about the Republican idiocy.
Dr. Michael Geci 4:32
Oh, you’re talking about Mickey Mouse Yeah, yeah. Disney. Yeah, yeah, yeah.
Honey Smith Walls 4:41
And here they’re still trying to cap THC.
Dr. Michael Geci 4:44
Yeah, you know, I’ve mixed feelings about capping THC. I think that it’s not a popular thing, but I mean, I think that there needs to be some sort of regulation on it.
Honey Smith Walls 5:19
I agree with that.
Dr. Michael Geci 5:20
On some level. I mean,
Honey Smith Walls 5:22
I’d sure like for the legislators to get out of the way of scientists doing real work.
Dr. Michael Geci 5:27
How is it that the politicians are able to tell doctors what the indication is so you know,
Honey Smith Walls 5:30
My point precisely.
Dr. Michael Geci 5:5:318
I talked about that in the book, you know, there wasn’t a single person on the State Board of Medical examiners who were consulted. They didn’t consult with any medical people in Montana, at least. I mean, I’m sure there’s other states maybe they have but this whole idea that doctors can’t think for themselves, you know, granted there are these card Mills, and you know, and they’re just not like the pill clinics that came out of Florida, right? I mean,
Honey Smith Walls 6:17
Oh, yeah, that was a special time. You know how a physician gets his ability to recommend cannabis down here? He takes a two hour course on the laws of cannabis in Florida. Oh, really? Yeah. Don’t have to know anything about the actual plant or its 1000s of compounds in it, but you know, go ahead… recommend it.
Dr. Michael Geci 6:42
Yeah, that’s another thing you know, the censorship that takes place around cannabis. Cannabis is not being taught in medical schools, like the endocannabinoid system, you know we actually thought that last year, I reached out to a Medical College of Georgia and I contacted the Dean. I told him what my thoughts were and he said, “Well, I’m not sure what the appetite for this is going to be but I’ll forward it to the curriculum Dean.” and I got a nice email from her and we set up a zoom call, and it was super nice, you know, woman, black female. She was a OB GYN trained in Detroit, and had spent like, six, seven years at Wayne State, you know, pretty progressive and she seemed really excited by the whole thing. And she actually told us that maybe I could teach the course at the end of December that there was a little bit of time… this is last year and I’m like, holy cow. So, I emailed and she said, “Well, I just have to run it up the chain of command, right?” Yeah. So she did that. And you know? I emailed her a couple times, I sent her some more information. I sent her a chapter from another book about cannabis and pregnancy so she’d see that this was a literature based and empirically based review. And, you know, I never heard back from her I got…
Honey Smith Walls 9:00
You got nipped in the bud, didn’t you?
Dr. Michael Geci 9:03
I called. I called her office a couple times and left…. and I even sent her a copy of my book and signed it and said, You know, I’m really excited by this and, and she didn’t even she didn’t say thanks. For the book. You know, it’s just like, gosh, you know, I mean, so
Honey Smith Walls 9:23
She was empirically told not to,
Dr. Michael Geci 9:26
I guess…. but I mean
Honey Smith Walls 9:31
I mean you was speaking to a woman in business. She certainly had the common sense to at least say thank you, and she didn’t. She was told not to, not to be in touch with you anymore.
Dr. Michael Geci 9:46
Yeah, being blessed or cursed with a high sensitivity personality… I’ve read that book, The Four Agreements and I do well on three of the agreements. It’s so hard not taking things personally…
Honey Smith Walls 10:15
For me too… I can’t believe you said that. No, for me to try not to take it personally. And here’s something that you guys are teaching me and I’m why I’m so grateful. Just to be a fly on the wall. In your conferences, you know, and around all of you cannabis experts talking about this on a daily basis is what I love that I’m privileged to be in this audience and hear this and then try to you know, help my little audience understand the regurgitated version of it, but honestly, now I forgotten what the hell I was gonna say, oh, goofy me.
I’m just… I just appreciate the ability to be here on the ground floor with all of this science rising oh, here’s the thought. And what I’m really learning from you is that to heal the human being, you must heal the spirit too. And the beautifully glorious thing about cannabis in any of its forms so far that I’ve been able to enjoy is that it gives you introspection… introspection, and allows you to forgive whomever… yourself or somebody else… and think about what’s happening and go from there in a lifted way.
Because it can lift you out of, you know, anger and out of anxiety and stuff like that, but don’t let me get on that soapbox. I’m just grateful that you have that I’m able to learn from you how important the human spirit is, along with the human physical part too. Because it’s all one. It’s all one. You can’t separate it.
Dr. Michael Geci 12:14
Yeah well first thank thanks for saying that. And you know, it is all one and the thing that I’ve learned more and more, and maybe it’s a function of age, but the first big thing that I kind of you know, tried to embrace is that healing is like a mathematical equation, and that there’s multiple ways of solving for x and so out of finding that which works for you, and that which works for you should be a compact or contract between yourself and your health care practitioner, be it your physician, your chiropractor, your nurse practitioner, your PA, whatever. The government should just stay the hell out of it.
Honey Smith Walls 13:13
They should worry about us having a roof over our heads and insurance. Yeah, food in our belly…
Dr. Michael Geci 13:21
Doing what we can do to decrease carbon emissions. Yeah. Doing what we can to heal ourselves… because you talked about the spirit. And you know, one of the things about this whole spirit thing is that we are a nation built on trauma. And gosh, there’s a certain reckoning with that. Yeah. You know, one of the greatest things that I’ve learned…. one of the greatest insights that has been revealed to me is the idea that…
Honey Smith Walls 14:11
I want to give you a tip about a neurologist, I know interest. Dr. Anthony Mazo is a highly rated specialist here in Melbourne, Florida. Dr. Mazo is not quick to prescribe traditional synthetic chemicals when he knows that this gentle live plant therapy will likely give the needed relief. I know this to be true because I had to see him for my own old lady neuropathy issues. He did not prescribe the usual synthetic stuff. He told me to go get a particular kind of cannabis instead and use it in a specific way to find relief. And that is what every doctor in America should have in their little black bag. His clinic details will be in my show notes for you because he’s a trusted cannabis expert in the field of neurology. Dr. Anthony Mazo, a great friend to all of us in Melbourne, Florida at the Brevard neuro center. Find his details in my show notes.
Dr. Michael Geci 15:10
You know prior to this, trauma to me was “Did you get shot? Were you in a car wreck? Fall off a building? But you know… trauma. Really, you know the non physical trauma or non visible trauma is the trauma that is probably the most pervasive that we face because it doesn’t leave the same kind of marks that a gunshot or knife wound or road rash might leave… and this idea that we live in a culture full of intergenerational trauma and knowing that these types of emotional traumas can be passed down epigenetically from one person to the next and you know… there’s a spiritual aspect to that and as well as the physical and a neuro neurological aspect of it.
And so, I don’t know I mean, this idea of some people wanting to use psychedelics… some people want to use meditation. I mean, Joe Dispenza, for example, you know, he talks about mindfulness, mostly, but you know, Rick Doblin, you know, he talks about using MDMA. I mean, there are different tools… there’s meditation, there’s yoga, there’s just so many different ways of like, finding you know, your space.
Honey Smith Walls 17:03
And that’s what we don’t know. As humans yet. Or at least in the American culture, it seems to me from my era, you know, 50s 60s 70s and so on. That we’re so programmed, you know, this is the right way to to be this is the right way to grow up. This is the right way to raise your kid and if you fall anywhere outside of that boundary well, you just ain’t been raised. Right.
Dr. Michael Geci 17:29
Yeah, you know, there’s this whole idea of shame, right. Back when we’re growing up probably, you know, being called red or commie that was… and then a little bit later, you know, if you were a doper you know? Oh you smoke that dope, don’t you….
Honey Smith Walls 17:55
Oh, yeah,
Dr. Michael Geci 17:56
But this idea that of inclusivity… it’s the idea of just accepting that we don’t know everything. It’s such an inflection point of not being able to appreciate what differences in each other and…
Honey Smith Walls 18:23
Why human is a spectrum. Yeah,
Dr. Michael Geci 18:27
I mean, it’s this whole idea that started with George W. Bush’s, you know, post 911, each of you know, you’re either with us or against us, and now it’s just, you know, it’s so polarized that it just, I don’t know, like, like, I mean, there’s so many different topics. You could frame like the trans subject, right, people who think I’ve got gender dysmorphia and accepting that some people probably do feel that way. I mean, there’s, there’s, like, seven, 8 billion people on the planet, and it’s like, you know, and almost all types of illnesses are on the spectrum, I mean, intelligence is on a spectrum, physical strength is on the spectrum, athleticism is on the spectrum, humor is on a spectrum. There are very few binary aspects to the human condition, and yet we simplify everything to oh, they’re either good or they’re bad, right? Yeah, bad people.
Honey Smith Walls 19:41
I work with Equality Florida, down here. It’s the nation’s largest LGBTQ plus organization, and we have got our work cut out for us. But I’m here to tell you, it takes some feet on the ground and in my case, really, and in all everybody’s case now it’s texting and phone calling, you know, to talk to others, broaden their horizons, get as much support as we can to talk to more people and change this ridiculous limited narrow thinking that’s going on down here that’s perpetuated by people it corrupts people, corrupt hearts, you know, corrupt hearts.
Dr. Michael Geci 20:33
No, I don’t know. I mean, I wish I knew how to more readily reach people and touch their hearts and like, soften them, you know? Because, you know…
Honey Smith Walls 20:52
Cannabis does that. That’s what I’m talking about. Let’s get more cannabis into more people. Because spiritually, it helps you be introspective, I mean, just in a mindfulness way, even if you’re not being mindful about it, it still helps you think about things in a different more accepting and loving way. This because the hate has gotten so out of hand. It’s so constantly propagated that it feels like you know, it’s a blanket over everybody and trying to get out from underneath. It is just an exercise in a bucket of worms of hate.
Dr. Michael Geci 21:36
Yeah, so I think what’s happening to cannabis is that it has been so commercialized…
Honey Smith Walls 22:01
And the language is awful, you know?
Dr. Michael Geci 22:04
Yeah, I mean, like I think that what you’re saying like using cannabis more in a ceremony of some type, but you know, people use it now. I mean, so many people use it now with no thought into where it came from. There’s thought in to, you know, its spirit so let’s just talk really briefly about, like, where it came from, like the idea that the disk cannabis that you’re smoking or ingesting, came from a 500,000 square foot greenhouse that has a carbon footprint the size of a small city. Right? Right. As opposed to some sort of legacy grow that was grown in the side of a mountain in Northern California or the Catskills or eastern Tennessee or wherever that it was that was a craft product.
Honey Smith Walls 23:16
The public didn’t know how to judge the good from the bad. They don’t know how to vet their source or their product.
Dr. Michael Geci 23:22
I mean, I kind of look at it like… I don’t know how often you fly but we fly from the north down south and you come into Atlanta… You come over all these chicken farms, these long rectangular buildings,
Honey Smith Walls 23:39
Yeah. poultry houses. Yeah.
Dr. Michael Geci 23:42
Yeah. And so all the chickens for Tyson and whoever…That’s how it’s all made, as opposed to free range chickens eating bugs and stuff. Like that, and do what you’re supposed to do. And so I kind of look at like cannabis the same way… that these big mega greenhouses, they’re like, these poultry Mills, you know, they’re just producing a plant, and there’s no sense of reverence. There’s no sense of spiritual acknowledgement.
Honey Smith Walls 24:22
I just love you for saying that. I mean, really, but I agree with you. You know, and part of it too, I think is just that, we’re still in the burgeoning stages of this industry. It’s just a baby still, you know, this industry, but there’s so much work that we have to do. I mean, people still in prison for smoking a plant?
Dr. Michael Geci 24:53
I mean, there are people serving life sentences for cannabis possession.
I mean, the idea that you could go to jail for growing a plant. It’s hard to get your head around it or that you have to have a permit to grow a plant. I mean, do you have to have a permit to grow your petunias? You have to have a permit to grow your marigolds. I mean, there’s just so many aspects of this plant that have been so radicalized. By people that is this idea that the devil’s weed and stuff…
I look nationally, and really the only group that I find that I’m able to really feel some alignment towards is the Last Prisoner Project because it feels like they’re really doing some hard work. Like you talked about this Chambers guy, I think that it’s great that he’s running for the Senate in Louisiana. I don’t know if he’s got a chance to win. I mean, I certainly hope he does. But so there’s a guy on Clubhouse who back-channeled me and told me that, yeah, he knows this guy. I said, Oh, well, I would love to have him come into our room and have a platform and talk about this because, you know, I just think that it’s important and again, just never heard anything back from the guy you know?
Honey Smith Walls 26:47
Keep after that guy, keep after that one. Because, you know, it’s really easy not to…. Listen to this old woman talking to you. It’s really easy to miss some communications with all of the variables that we’re using in this day and age of technology. I missed… I don’t want to tell you how often I missed a communique because it was in the back channel of clubhouse or it was in the back channel of LinkedIn or it was maybe off of some other, you know, Circle or some other place… some other app. And it’s just, you know, it’s we’re only one person… it’s hard to check in on all of those places and spaces. You know, but we’re doing our best. So keep after that guy, because you’ll get him. I’m sure he’s probably got a lot of offers to come Chit Chat too. But that’s, that would be a great one.
Dr. Michael Geci 27:50
I appreciate your inspiring inspiration to keep trying.
Honey Smith Walls 27:56
Well, you’re good at this. You get people riled up and that’s what being good at this means.
Dr. Michael Geci 28:03
It’s good. So just a quick segue you know, I told you about those foxes?

Dr. Michael Geci 1:19
So I’m looking out my south window and it looks like there’s four of them. And the mom just went down by the creek to go hunting, I guess. And but the foxes I mean, they’re just so cute, man.
Honey Smith Walls 1:34
Ohhhh my gosh!
Dr. Michael Geci 1:36
They’re kind of digging around the woodpile. They’re coming.
Honey Smith Walls 1:42
Do you have a telescoping camera?
Dr. Michael Geci 1:45
Yeah, when we get done I’ll take some pictures.
Honey Smith Walls 1:51
I can’t wait to see them. It’s really just a lovely thing to envision through your experience right now. It’s so precious. Just four little baby foxes out there having a hay day in the snow.
Dr. Michael Geci 2:07
Yeah, well, they’re there. Yeah, under the eaves of the house in the Catskills. So they’re just playing tug of war with a stick and I mean, they’re just, they’re like little puppies, except they’re a little bit fluffier, I think than a puppy. Yeah, but they’re really cute in there. Yeah.
Honey Smith Walls 2:41
Cold out there. Yeah, but their fur is fluffy.
Dr. Michael Geci 2:44
Oh, yeah. Yeah, no, it’s yeah, it’s probably it’s probably mid 40s here right now.
Honey Smith Walls 2:50
I got a sunburn this morning. Oh, yeah. Walk in my little world. So I’ve got five little little puppies I call wolves. And and we usually chase the turtles and offsprey around the pond out back. So yeah, I’m in a lovely spot too. And it’s just next to a wooded area and I’ve got a big pond with big mouth bass in it. Yeah, and the turtles. There were many, many, many turtles until a couple of otters came in about six months ago and cleared them all out. And they ate turtle shell and all I was surprised to find out.
Dr. Michael Geci 2:64
Oh, is that right?
Honey Smith Walls 2: 66
Yep, every single bit of that shell they would eat… You could see him sitting on the other side of the pond on the bank over there laying on their back getting sun with a big old piece of turtle shell that they were just nawing on and watching the world go by.
Huh?
Yeah, it was a surprise to me too. So we’ve got some little baby turtles that are about size of oh, maybe the palm of your hand now that are swimmers and box turtles and little flat footers, too. And and they’re learning about me now. My little wolves and I sit on the side of the pond every afternoon and feed the fish and the turtles come up and I play recorder to them. They’re my audience while I practice.
Dr. Michael Geci 4:27
All right, yeah. So what’s the nearest city that you live near there?
Honey Smith Walls 4:32
Well, I’m on the very east of the East Coast in the very middle of the state. And right across from Orlando. So the Orlando International Airport is about 40 minutes from my driveway and I’m in Melbourne, Florida.
Dr. Michael Geci 4:51
I want to ask you if that’s where… if you’ve ever been up to the Cape… have you ever seen a launch?
Honey Smith Walls 4:55
Many times. In fact, I have an Oklahoma girlfriend who ran herd over about 400 men up there when it was still you know before what’s his name came in here with all of his stuff. And she took us out on the launch pad and took us up the elevator and we got to crawl all over. One of those great big ships that went up and it was the last one that went up. Matter of fact, we just crawled all over that great big orange nose cone and peeked inside the windows. We couldn’t go inside of course. God it was so much fun. Yeah yeah. And then to see you know, Florida is so flat and then to go way up high in the air like that at the top of the spacecraft and then get to look at Florida as a state. You can practically see the whole state from there. It was just amazing.
Dr. Michael Geci 6:00
Wow. Did you go high enough where you can could you see the Gulf Coast?
Honey Smith Walls 6:09
Not that high. But it was a spacecraft standing upright and we were in the skeleton all around the nose cone but way up high in the sky. My Okie friend and her tour that she gave us one day… Lewi, my husband and me it was just fascinating.
Dr. Michael Geci 6:31
Wow. That would have been such an amazing treat.
Honey Smith Walls 6:34
It was really was.

Cannaba Verum is Latin for Cannabis Truth. Sourcing factual information about cannabis hasn’t always been easy for a variety of reasons. However now because of modern innovations, it is. My sources are from leaders in cannabis science like:
Roger Adams, U.S. Organic Chemist who isolated the structure of CBD,
Raphael Mechoulam, Israeli Organic Chemist who isolated the structure of THC,
Ethan Russo, Dir R&D International Cannabis and Cannabinoids Institute
Dustin Sulak, DO – my favorite doctor at healer.com, teaching the art of Cannabis Healing to the world, and other industry greats like:
Rev. Dr. Kymron DeCesare, Ed Rosenthal, Jack Herer, Michael Backes, and Michael Pollen and so many more… plus I use classical sites like: PubMed.gov, JAMAnetwork.com, ResearchGate.com. I listen to several daily podcasts to keep up with the latest cannabis news across the nation and throughout the world like: Dr. Codi Peterson et al on The Cannigma Podcast, MJTodayDaily.com and MarijuanaMoment.net. I trust the CBDProject.org and CannabisScienceTech.com. I watch the National Cannabis Industry Association (NCIA) at: thecannabisindustry.org and many more like: NCIA’s Cannabis Industry VOICE (CannabisRadio.com)
Over past episodes of Cannaba Verum, we’ve listened to some amazing scientists and medical professionals talk about their discoveries and patient successes as hundreds of questionable compounds rise to the public grasp. I am especially interested in the pharmacists movement becoming an integral part of this new medicinal choice.
Watch this machine roll into action through conversations with pharmacy doctors all over the nation like Dr. Leah Johnson out West and Dr. Alan Ao up North. There are so many more but these two have come on my show to explain the situation and it’s fascinating.

PS: Helping society get past the fear of using cannabis will be a lifelong journey for me. This industry is just opening up and most patients and doctors are seriously cannabis naive and need help understanding where to turn for trustworthy information.
If you need help opening that cannabis discussion with your family doctor, please reach out and grab the Dear Doctor Letter I wrote for this exact purpose. It will explain your decision to try cannabis and ask for their help in monitoring your labs and progress. It will also show them where they can find medical research on the subject of your diagnosis and the effects of cannabis.
