Intro

Welcome to season three of the Cannaba Verum podcast, the cannabis truth podcast.

I speak the language of cannabis freely and uncensored while educating my audience on safe use this live plant therapy. You should know what’s in your cannabis…what’s good and what’s not.

It does not come with an FDA stamp of approval yet. Using cannabis mindfully as medication is a different concept in Western healthcare philosophy, specifically of the past 100 years. There’s a lot to learn and reconsider.

The information you’ll find here comes straight from scientists and clinicians doing the work and reporting their findings in real time through various live online outlets.

The scientific truth of cannabis is finally getting out and is wide open for all to see at respected medical sites like pubmed.gov and JAMA, the Journal of American Medical Association… and I’m right there in the thick of it with all those titans of medicine… as a fly on the wall.

Because I’m not a doctor, nor did I go to med school. But I did take dozens of private cannabis courses and still engage in continuing education offered by cannabis expert scientists over the past few years and slowly began to see and understand the bigger picture.

Now I talk to people all day long about cannabis and hopefully inspire them to research the facts as we know them today. Cannabis is an amazing alternative in health remedies. It can reportedly alleviate typical disease problems and troubling side effects, even those caused by synthetic prescriptions.

This is Honey Smith Walls, a 21st century cannabis shaman, not a doctor, not a scientist, raised by nuns and wolves in the verdant cattle pastures of the Oklahoma oil fields. I’m here to amplify the truth of this great big story of cannabis in historical, political, and scientific terms, so you can make educated decisions about the medicine you choose to ingest.

Honey Smith Walls 3:15

It sounds like I’ve got Nicole… Hello, how are you? Hi,  I’m just sitting here kind of like an old cowpoke. If you thought of me as some 10 year old little girl coming out of the barn whose never seen a bath bomb before….

Nicole Hemming 3:46

That’s awesome and you’re in…?

Honey Smith Walls 3:50

I’m way down in Melbourne, Florida, right now but I grew up in the Midwest… in Oklahoma and Arkansas and Kansas and Missouri.

Nicole Hemming4:01

Oh nice. Yeah, I thought in your picture… because it had a little bit of sound to it… but it sounded like an ocean… so I was thinking it was probably Florida. Yeah.

Honey Smith Walls 4:12

Oh, well, thank you so much for coming and telling our audience how all of this came about for you. I really try to let them have a well rounded view of the entire cannabis industry historically speaking and politically and scientifically… of course, and I’ve been reading… Well, I looked you up on LinkedIn and there was a wonderful magazine article there… you remember that from Canvas Rebel Magazine?

Nicole Hemming4:53

Yes, I did. That was one of our newer ones that just came out not too long ago.

Honey Smith Walls 4:58

Well, it was really moving and I hope everybody gets a chance to see that. I’ll put the link in our show notes. But really, Nicole, shut me up and tell everybody about yourself and your company.

Nicole Hemming 5:11

Well. Absolutely. My name is Nicole Hemming and I’m co-owner of Relax And CBD.

We actually originally started… we became an official company September 18 of 2018. And it’s been actually a really exciting ride even through COVID and all the ups and downs because I even think with COVID… it helped slow us down enough to be able to do that continued education… both for ourselves, but for a lot of our clients. It’s been really amazing.

We actually started because I was diagnosed with cancer at 26 and it was thyroid cancer that spread to my lymph nodes. And since your lymph nodes constantly circulate throughout your body, it’s like something that they pretty much put at bay. They got rid of it enough but it’s at bay for now.

And one of the things that made it incredibly difficult for me was that not only being young and knowing you know, I should have a lot more energy than this but all the medication that I was on just making me so sick and I was a really young mom, and I just felt like I wasn’t you know myself and that was around the time that’s, you know, CBD started getting some notoriety and like coming out and it’s not such a big faux pas… I was on over 15 different medications.

Because one thing would lead to another and they would have all these side effects and stuff and so I just started kind of substituting that in my diet along with other forms of vitamins. And here I am today… I not only have such an amazing belief towards this plant as a whole… I really felt at that point I needed to spend my life helping others to feel better. In a more natural way.

Honey Smith Walls 7:30

I wish I had known you sooner.

Nicole Hemming7:33

Oh well thank you. It’s really personal to me. And I just truly believe in its health benefits to this day. One of the things why we did start the company… the way that we did was… I did kind of tinker with different things and I needed help topically for some of my treatments that I was doing with my skin and I just started kind of adding it into that stuff.

And I loved the fact that at that point, any age could take it and that it still had that really big faux pas and everybody was nervous like…were they going to be tested for work and different things like that. And this was a way of almost their first step of feeling more comfortable right within taking it because it was topical and you didn’t need to have all these special licenses and we’ve just kind of made that our big mission… not only to help educate people on cannabis in general, but to kind of help dip their toes into the water, I guess you could say and into that world just to see, to literally see it. Yeah. And just like if it doesn’t work, let me help you with another brand because I don’t believe in it being just one brand. I am a true believer that there are so many different cannabis brands out there that are absolutely amazing. So like if this one didn’t do it for you, let me help you with this other thing. And it’s just been a really wild ride. It’s been awesome.

And since we’ve been a business… we have not only worked and been able to sponsor amazing people, but we’ve also been given the opportunity to help sponsor youth sports we’ve been given the opportunity to work with a wonderful organization called Senior High which helps educate that senior community incessant they’re the ones that there needs to be a little bit more convincing with it. Yep, because they’ve been told for so long that it’s such a bad thing…  but it’s really an amazing thing. All the doors that cannabis has opened and just watching personally, like, just the lives it’s changed. It’s a really amazing plant.

Honey Smith Walls 10:11

What scientists convinced you about cannabis in your quest to for relief through your cancer journey?

Nicole Hemming10:23

It was actually at first it really wasn’t a scientist it was that I had to convince my doctors because it was still such a new thing. They haven’t been able to get up on enough research quite yet. It has changed quite a few of their minds. I will say since then, but it wasn’t really a lot of them who did it. It was a couple friends. But there was one friend in particular that had told me about two specific books that I ended up getting… one is called Healing With Cannabis and the other one is called the Rebels Apothecary Practical Guide to the healing magic of cannabis CBD and mushrooms. And yep, and both those books were really what kind of changed my mind about it. There is scientific stuff behind it. There is this new science…

Honey Smith Walls 11:27

Science is science.

Nicole Hemming11:29

Yeah, you can’t argue with the numbers and everything else…

Honey Smith Walls 11:33

Empirical truth. So yeah, that’s it. Yeah, I totally geek out on the science of cannabis. And I’m nowhere near… I didn’t get… I didn’t have an upper level education except through life for 60 years. But you know, I didn’t get to go to med school is what I’m saying. So I find myself so curious about this and the precious thing to me is that the cannabis scientists are allowing public conversation and view around what they’re discovering and what they’re doing in their own clinics. And so the science world has just been fantastic. And I was curious, you know, if maybe you were following any in particular, you know, from Dr. Rafael Mischoulam on up… and he’s a 92 year old lab rat still discovering.

Nicole Hemming12:34

Yes he was the one that discovered thc… Yeah, right. Yeah, yes,

Honey Smith Walls 12:38

Yes. And the endocannabinoid system of receptors. Yes. All of that. So yeah, he’s been, he’s been instrumental in the, in the world of cannabis science. And we have a lot of American scientists too… Ethan Russo, Dustin Sulak, Bonnie Goldstein. Well, she’s a clinician, but they’re just a bunch of wonderful American doctors who are in the science world, sorry, didn’t mean to go off on all of that.

Nicole Hemming13:11

No, I love it. I love hearing about all these things. And I love talking to somebody who has just as much heart and enthusiasm as I do. Yeah.

Honey Smith Walls 13:24

It’s this enthusiasm and love and passion for this plant… it’s a remarkable thing and spirit in itself. And yes, yes, this world centers around compassion, not only to patients…

Nicole Hemming13:39

Compassion, but just to sit there and see like all the different things that I can do… both if you ingest it or use it topically that it relieves anxiety, you know, just everything… seeing people’s entire demeanor change is very moving.

Honey Smith Walls 13:57

So we have receptors in our skin. And when you climb into a bathtub full of water and cannabinoids and terpenes that have been dissolving, they’re all going to soak into your skin.

Nicole Hemming14:13

What’s really nice is being able to have the other ingredients inside of it. That also help to work so when you’ve got not only CBD, but say Epsom salt, it’s going to help detoxify you. It’s going to help with inflammation, different things like that, it’s really nice to sit there and know that it’s it elongates and extends what you normally would have done just a little bit longer.

Honey Smith Walls 14:40

Oh honey I’m in and out of the tub. And so you can’t hold me in there very long. You know, it’s like… I got to do other stuff… you might get my body in a tub for a minute but I’d rather go to the beach and do that. But anyway, so what else are in your bath bombs. Tell us about the good Juju and how y’all figured it out?

Nicole Hemming15:04

Well, like I said we have Epson salt, and one of our other main ingredients that’s actually in a lot of our product line as a whole is sweet almond oil. So everything in Colorado is very dry… it’s a dry state. You’re always applying all that stuff. So what our thing was doing… it all was making sure that it was a good carrier oil that wouldn’t leave build-up on the top of the skin but can be really helpful and draw that CBD lower… below that dermis.

And that that is actually one of my favorite ingredients that we’ve used next to CBD outside most of our products. It’s nice because even if you are in and out of the bath with a bath balm that has some of that in it, it’s really going to help soak that up still really quickly or if you use any of our topicals that are outside of the bath. If you’re on the go… any of that is nice because it helps become more fast acting.

Honey Smith Walls 16:12

And then I don’t have to slather myself in juice of some kind that my mother was always doing. “Let me go! I just want to go play!” So I like that idea. It actually would be faster, wouldn’t it? Yeah. Wow. I used to live in Aurora. My mother used to drive to The Springs every summer and go out to the Garden of the Gods. It’s so beautiful. Thank you for reminding me. Where are you?

Nicole Hemming16:44

I am actually in Lakewood, a little tiny area. So I’m about five minutes from Red Rocks. So yeah,

Honey Smith Walls 16:54

Red Rocks! What’s the last thing you got to go see?

Nicole Hemming16:57

Oh well I was actually there not too long ago for it’s called Movie on the Rocks. So it’s great because they have a live band and kind of like a little light show. And then they play usually classic movies on this massive screen on the stage and you’ve got the entire Denver skyline in the background. Oh my god. Beautiful.

Honey Smith Walls 17:19

It is…. thank you for reminding me of that. Oh. So tell me a little bit more about how the company came to be. I mean, you chose bath bombs and additives and topicals like this. As you were in the middle of your journey of cancer.

Nicole Hemming17:51

Yeah, I mean…

Honey Smith Walls 17:54

You just put that together.

Nicole Hemming17:56

Yeah, well because I was having really bad skin issues. So the form of treatments that I have for my form of cancer is surgery and or radioactive iodine which is a form of radiation that I ingest and it stays in my body for an extra amount of time.

And when that happens… man I had the driest skin… like it affects everything. It makes your hair and nails fall off…  but I was getting almost like these kind of open sores. Because I would just crack and I wasn’t getting better and lotions and the next step was putting me on topical steroids and I’m like, I can’t be on this for a super long period of time and so I had always kind of tinkered with my own back stuff. And I just decided that well, you know, I kind of started using CBD sublingually so underneath my tongue and I had noticed things were working very well that way and I was like, You know what, I’m gonna start off this way and I began it at that time.

Topicals weren’t really too much of a thing. And if they were, they all smelled incredibly medicated. And as a young female, I don’t necessarily want to walk around smelling like Icy Hot letting people know like, oh, something’s wrong with her.

So I wanted to find more natural ways… like using lavender, different stuff like that to set these things and my skin. It was totally night and day. It switched what seems to be almost overnight, and I couldn’t stop talking enough about it. And yeah, so during kind of around that time my other co-founder… his name’s Justin… He’s been my best friend since we were freshmen in high school.

And as a little side note… I was always the social butterfly… had to talk to everybody, who’s the super smart kid and every semester in high school we were put in the same science class. So I just kind of made him my partner. So I could still be social, and he can help me out quite a bit more and we are total opposites yet he’s still to this day, one of my absolute best friends.

And as we had gotten older, and I was kind of doing the stuff on my skin, he was playing, you know, some competitive soccer and hurt himself. And when he hurt himself, I was like, hey, like, you shouldn’t be in this, like massive amount of pain. Here take some of them and I gave him some bath bombs to help with it.

And he looks at me, Of course, like I’m crazy. And I’m like, yeah, like, guys,  like they don’t know they don’t have to do it like a girl. Hold on. Like do a foot soak or something like that. And I don’t know how I convinced him but he did. And he came back and he was like Nicole! This just works… like it really works.

And I was like, yeah! So we both kind of decided to get into business together because he felt that the product was amazing. I genuinely find him to be so phenomenally intelligent. He just always blows my mind and stuff. And I’m like, No, we can absolutely do this and we really set forth… we started with close friends and family… and just continued to grow from there. And it’s been really rewarding because we actually got our first two international awards at the end of 2021.

Honey Smith Walls 22:10

Congratulations !

Nicole Hemming22:14

We got it through a global Hospitals and Physicians Magazine. So it’s nice because when we sent this all off, they do all the testing. They do everything that they have to and it was nice to know that our product was backed by the medical community.

It was great knowing that we were able to produce something where all of our ingredients are completely organic. It is something all natural. We don’t sell it strictly to dispensaries. Because when going inside a dispensary, you do have to be 21 or older. We really wanted to have it where it would be any age available. Right? Yeah. And that it was just because we do know that it does make certain people nervous to go into dispensaries…

Honey Smith Walls 23:06

Yeah when they can use your product is what you’re saying.

Nicole Hemming23:09

Yeah. And it makes them feel awesome. If they need to go into someplace they can just grab it real quick and try it.

Honey Smith Walls 23:22

I wanna try the mango bomb…because it just feels like mango marmalade?

Nicole Hemming23:29

Yes,

Honey Smith Walls 23:31

I want to try that. That is just so appealing to me. I can almost taste the terpenes and boy do I have a book for Justin… he would love the book I’m currently reading with a bunch of nurses out in California and all across the United States, called The Big Book of Terps by Russ Hudson, and it might influence you all.

Nicole Hemming24:03

No, I think that’s something that would be great.

Honey Smith Walls 24:06

No kidding because it tells you what terpenes do and where you can find the terpenes and in what foods and what their primary everything is… all the data Yeah.

Nicole Hemming24:22

Now it’s a very important book, yeah,

Honey Smith Walls 24:26

Pretty amazing and the terpenes that are coming inside your bath bombs are doing some pretty amazing work. So I can just imagine what they’re going to smell like when I order your amazing mango marmalade bathbomb… I can’t stop thinking about it. I’m just like, totally geeked out. I’m looking at the picture.

Nicole Hemming24:51

Well, it’s great too because it is kind of like that time of year because we do have specific scents and it’s nice to have a variety given the times of year and this is one of those really good times where everything people are going to start picking… all the fruits and it’s just fresh and we think that’s probably one of my favorite.

Honey Smith Walls 25:14

Tell me about a sugar scrub. What what does a CBD sugar scrub do for you?

Nicole Hemming 25:23

So you can actually do it either as if you say you’re getting a manicure or pedicure, you can swap out your skin because what it does is it helps block out the dry skin and it’s a really, really good exfoliant so you can rub it on your face, almost like a face mask once a week.

Honey Smith Walls 25:52

You know I was born in a barn… what’s a massage candle? What is CBD soy? What’s that?

Nicole Hemming 26:04

Yes. So we use soy wax for it. So this is actually one of my favorite products that we have. And this is one that we won a specific award for our product line separately through Global Hospitals and Physicians… We’re the leading purveyor of the soy massage candle for the US in 2021. And what is great about it, it’s almost a two on one.

So the soy wax and the other ingredients that we have in it makes it a lot softer. So you can either use it as a topical salve, or say that you’ve just got some deeper aches and pains in your body. You would light the wick get your desired amount of melted wax, blow out the wick and that hot wax helps to more deeper penetrate those areas.

Honey Smith Walls 27:02

Wow, that sounds delicious.

Nicole Hemming27:04

Yes, they’re very nice. They’re not meant to like heat the room. We have to tell people it’s not meant to heat the room with a nice scent because when you’re healthy always like it’s good physically for massaging into those areas. So it’s really good for people who have like the deep arthritic pain, any sort of knee and hip replacements, different things like that, that are just a little bit deeper that you can’t necessarily get through with a regular topical… the heat just helps them more deeper penetrate those aches and pains and it really is good stuff.

Honey Smith Walls 27:41

Oh I can tell that that’s going to have to go in my shopping basket too

Nicole Hemming27:47

But those ones are my absolute favorite.

Honey Smith Walls 27:51

Okay, but you also do have massage oil?

Nicole Hemming27:54

We do. So you can do it because some people don’t necessarily like having the oily skin from the other one that helps more deeper penetrate once again. They all still have sweet almond oil in it as the main carrier oil so it’s really great as that it actually soaks into your skin… you give it less than three minutes and your hands are no longer shiny. It’s completely absorbed within your dermis.

So that’s really nice, but it’s the the massage oil that’s really good for more on the go because it’s more concealable. We wanted to not only give our clients options of having, different sizes and stuff, but that was really good to fit in a purse or anything like that. So if you’ve got headaches, you know, localized pain, that one’s a really good, easy on the go to help get you through the day and it’s not as bulky.

Honey Smith Walls 28:58

Okay yeah…

Nicole Hemming29:01

As a soy massage candle, it’s not as bulky as that so it’s nice because you use that sweet massage candle more so at the end of the day, just because your apt to be more swollen, and throbbing and achy towards the end of the day. But this one, like I said, it’s really nice to go throughout the day, or if you just want to get all the CBD health effects and feel like you’re being pampered. That was really great just to do a body massage or if you’re getting your nails done and nice little pampered hand massage or foot massage. It’s really great.

Honey Smith Walls 29:36

That sounds wonderful.

I’d carry it in my purse or the guys would probably just throw it in the car and the little bucket beside the seat and then… don’t leave your CBD in a hot car. So I want to add again, you’re talking to born in the barn girl here. I’ve never seen a bath bomb before and I see that yours are… I mean I have… but I’ve really never used a bath bomb.

So what do I do with it? So is it heavy? I mean, I see a box and I see a glob that looks like a baseball and so what do I do? Do I… can I handle it and or is it too concentrated? Should I swirl it around in my bathtub? Cam I use it over and over again? What happens if I lick it?

Nicole Hemming0:56

Hahahha Well it’s probably definitely not good to lick like that. But ours is actually we decide to produce ours with a flat bottom and what’s great about the flat bottom is that we feel like it evenly distributes throughout your water that way where as most bath bombs are rounds and when they’re soaking in the water with all the Epsom salt and citric acid it kind of moves it around like in a circle and in your other areas where it’s more dense. Tends to clump and fall to the bottom of your bath.

Honey Smith Walls 1:40

Is it okay to use a bath bomb in a whirlpool bath?

Nicole Hemming1:44

Yeah, I’ve never heard any issues with any of that because most Whirlpool baths you would have to clean out anyway… clean out all the jets and stuff. I have never used it that way because I just have a standing tub and I don’t really think anybody I’ve ever talked to asked that. That’s actually a good question. I don’t think anybody’s ever asked me that. A couple of our distributors are spas. And those spas will use them within sight. They’re their foot baths so they have all their jets.

Honey Smith Walls 2:16

It’s just an older whirlpool bathtub… right right with cheap steel in them because of the Epson salt brine going through the tubes and stuff but otherwise right, it would be ok. It would nicely distribute the stuff as it’s melting off the ball, I presume?

Nicole Hemming2:49

Yes. Well, what’s also nice too is that we add in all the caldarium, because our caldarium scent is actually eucalyptus base. So with that one, we’re actually trying to focus more on opening up your senses and help with more of that spa like therapeutic.

Mazo Promo

Honey Smith Walls 3:11

Hey, my friends, I want to give you a tip about a neurologist I know and trust Dr. Anthony Michael was a highly rated specialist here in Melbourne, Florida, one of the first physicians to research and study cannabis since 2016, when it was legalized in Florida. Dr. Maza was not quick to prescribe traditional synthetic chemicals when he knows that this gentle live Plant Therapy will likely give the needed relief. I know this to be true because I had to see him for my own old lady neuropathy issues. He did not prescribe the usual synthetic stuff. He told me to go get a particular kind of cannabis instead and use it in a specific way to find relief. And that, my friends, is what every doctor in America should have in their little black bags. His clinic details will be in my show notes for you. Why? Because he’s a trusted cannabis expert in the field of neurology, Dr. Anthony Mazowe. A great friend to us all in Melbourne, Florida at the Brevard neuro center. Looking at your website and and the products that you’ve got going I want to talk about risk a

Nicole Hemming4:26

yes. Tell me about oh, oh my gosh. So that is the only line of ours that is actually and fused with pheromones. And I love this wine because I it holds an even bigger special place in my heart out of all of the other products in it because I specifically did this to start off for my older clientele and have a funny side story. I won’t use any names, but my clients he was using some Viagra and you know is in the mood and but also needs a hip replacement. It just didn’t go together very well for him that evening. So I decided like what would be a great way of doing this stuff to where not only like talking to my clients, I like how I can specifically help their needs, but still kind of get them in the mood and that is our line that I need. Like I said specifically for my older clientele at first that is infused with pheromones. So not only can it help with any of your topical needs but it helps the mood keep going for 60 times so I love that line. Wow. Yeah, it’d be to kind of fun.

Honey Smith Walls 5:52

But that’s a wonderful story and you know, and gives hope to those moments. You know, you get you get one organ fixed and the other one goes.

Nicole Hemming6:11

What I love is that it’s so right. Well and what I love is that it’s so versatile because the pheromones actually mixes with every single person’s natural body oils. So it’s no different on every single person and it is amazing the sense of it in general, but then when it mixes with everybody else, and it’s something you can’t see, but it’s something that when you get those pheromones going you can sense it on people and just kind of feel it gets you in the mood and it’s really kind of a cool thing to be able to add that with inside the product to just do something a little bit different.

Honey Smith Walls 6:52

That’s amazing. Well, it’s and it’s a great peek behind the veil of science into pheromones to and you know, the power of pheromones. So I love all that geeky stuff that’s amazing. Our audience get in touch with you how can we see your products? How can we start putting each one of those products in the basket and get it paid for and get our products? How I can do that.

Nicole Hemming7:22

Right? You’re like we need that. So we are actually sold in multiple Ace Hardware is two values. Murdoch’s? No,

Honey Smith Walls 7:37

two minutes for me.

Nicole Hemming7:39

Well, we are down there and quite a few. A handful, quite a few handfuls of Ace Hardware into values. Yeah, down in Florida to where you’re at. So and very often our there we also you can go online to relax and cbd.com That’s also another great way to order because we send it directly to you. And then we’re also on LinkedIn, we’re on Facebook, we’re on Instagram, so I try to keep Yeah, everywhere. Well, I try to keep everybody updated on like when specific send comes out to people that we sponsored, just stopping by to say hi to people and give some extended education. So I tend to sit there and put things up pretty regularly on all those sites.

Honey Smith Walls 8:29

That’s fantastic. And boy, what a big job it is to keep social media. Can you tell me I’m still I’m still on bath bombs. Barium what’s caldarium? The CBD bath bomb that you’ve got

Nicole Hemming8:45

with Meriam. One is eucalyptus, eucalyptus base and a great back story about a caldarium. Those were what they actually used to call Russian bath houses. So yeah, so it’s a nice little facts. So we kind of work that in to those things that we do and we actually formulated that sense and our botanicals den, which is green tea lemongrass. We’ve formulated those for the Marriott owns hotel and spas. That we’re in also

Honey Smith Walls 9:17

girl to graduates. Why thank

Nicole Hemming9:21

you. Nice to give that spa extra for it.

Honey Smith Walls 9:28

Well, it sounds like you all are doing well in the industry and what are your projections for the next few years do you you know, are you are you doing okay in Colorado with it with you know, your end of the industry and what are your projections? Our

Nicole Hemming9:46

projections with over the next few years is just to continue to grow across the country. I would love to start touching base probably in the next like 12 months, starting to get overseas to other places. But I really am trying to focus currently right now on just extending and expanding that education throughout the United States because as a whole it wasn’t lifted. So we’re it’s almost like playing catch up for all the different states. Oh, it’s so

Honey Smith Walls 10:19

mishmash. Yeah, I I’m just really impressed that you’ve made such a headway on this journey and you’ve got some really nice little creds to go along with what’s been happening with the hospitals and physicians behind you and selling to the Marriott and getting your accolades that you have already in, in this industry. That’s a coup to you and to just and so congratulations to honey to your boat. And I hope that you’ll come back and join us and and help my audience understand how we can use this this tool of cannabis to our advantage in so many different ways that we already utilized throughout our day, right?
