CV 164 Amy Donahue Value

Hello friends. We continue the conversation today with social media Maestro Amy Donahue, as she helps us understand what the social media world looks like for cannabis businesses, and how we should consider which ones to use. They don’t all work. Join us for some juicy Cannaba Verum discussion right after the intro.

Welcome to season three of the Cannaba Verum podcast, the cannabis truth podcast. I speak the language of cannabis freely and uncensored while educating my audience on safe use of this live Plant Therapy. You should know what’s in your cannabis. what’s good and what’s not. It does not come with an FDA stamp of approval yet. using cannabis mindfully as medication is a different concept in western healthcare philosophy, specifically the past 100 years. There’s a lot to learn and reconsider. The information you’ll find here comes straight from scientists and clinicians doing the work and reporting their findings in real time through various live online outlets. The scientific truth of cannabis is finally getting out and is wide open for all to see it respected medical sites like pubmed.gov and JAMA, the Journal of American Medical Association and I’m right there in the thick of it with all those titans of medicine as a fly on the wall. I’m not a doctor, nor did I go to med school, but I did take dozens of private cannabis courses and still engage in continuing education offered by cannabis experts scientists over the past few years and slowly began to see and understand the bigger picture. Now I talk to people all day long about cannabis and hopefully inspire them to research the facts as we know them today. Cannabis is an amazing alternative and health remedies. It can reportedly alleviate typical disease problems and troubling side effects, even those caused by synthetic prescriptions. This is honey Smith walls a 21st century cannabis shaman, not a doctor, not a scientist, raised by nuns and wolves in the Verdun cattle pastures of the Oklahoma oil fields.
I’m here to amplify the truth of this great big story in cannabis in historical political and scientific terms. So you can make educated decisions about the medicine you choose to ingest.

Honey Smith Walls 2:40
So for instance, you wanted to be taking the wrong kind of of cannabis at night when you’re trying to wind down and go to sleep but there’s a totally different terpene that will help uplift your your focus and energy in the morning that would be perfect for you to help you get rid of the pain in your arthritic hands as well as I lift you up and get you started for the day like a nice cup of coffee. So so that’s all that I meant about type one and type two and type three.

Amy Donohue Media Maestro 3:20
Yeah, cuz I had never heard that but I liked that. I liked that. I know that now because you are in a state that is very medically forward so you’re gonna know some stuff that then I don’t because we’re not medical anymore.

Honey Smith Walls
This is a realm that caught… the science caught my interest before yeah thing and because Florida was only medical then you know I was leaning more that way myself. And yet when I traveled and went to recreational places it just scared shit out of me. Apologies audience that everybody for you all hearing my little wolves lose their minds. Daddy’s coming home and the dogs are at the front door barking their heads off. Yeah, I got five of them in there just losing their minds. So anyway.

Honey Smith Walls 4:07
I really have a healthy respect now for the cannabinoids and terpenes within cannabis and the differences they’re in and incredibly healthy respect for trying to find a doctor for your issues for a diagnosis and then finding an expert cannabis doctor to follow up with whatever your diagnosis is.

Now this is all just medical. So like I said, when I went to a different state that was recreational, I was terrified of the candy shops I saw. It’d be very daunting with 1000 milligrams of THC in a candy bar… what what what what?

Amy Donohue Media Maestro 5:26
Well, there are patients that need that and that’s why those products exist but how a patient in a recreational atmosphere know why they can’t buy it.

But what how do they know what to buy and what a milligram does to them?

Amy Donohue Media Maestro 6:14
Well, they don’t know anything… but the problem…. Well, I don’t know if this is a problem or what… but you would not be able to buy 1000 milligram bar here in Arizona unless you were a patient.

Adult-use in most states caps edibles at 10 milligrams per serving. So you would not be able to buy that recreationally here in Arizona and a lot of states. They do have a 10 milligram cap, but they’ll package it differently to make it look like each thing is 10 milligrams. So that 1000 milligram bar would say 100 servings, and that’s how they get around that… but there are patients who need that. And you know there are people who drink until they get drunk. That’s what that bar is going to do for their objective. Go to milligrams. That’s an awful lot of THC. You’ll see YouTube videos of it, but that doesn’t help our industry when people put it out there and how blacked out they are on it because that’s bringing it back to alcohol which we need to get away from in this country. It’s causing so many health issues, but nobody talks about it. Because you know if you don’t drink you don’t have a pretty girl in a hot tub in the backyard. You know, that’s what my generation grew up on. Was learning that alcohol makes you more popular. Well you know, that’s just Gen X.

Honey Smith Walls 6:33
I’m afraid Baby Boomers had that attitude too, generally. Yeah, yeah. And that’s, that’s who I am. So well.
Amy Donohue Media Maestro 6:49
We grew up on the war on drugs. Right? That’s right. The Boomers thing like that and then give myself because it was Gen X too though. I mean, it started in the 30s with Anslinger and it’s all been all the white guys yeah old white guys.

Honey Smith Walls 7:29
I love that you know that history.

Amy Donohue Media Maestro 7:40
I have to because I have to market it when it comes to social media. You don’t put your price on stuff. That’s not what social media is about. It’s about showing what your product is about. Show me who the chef is. Show me who the extractor is. What kind of machines do you use? People need to understand in this industry. It’s an industry that is wide open for entrepreneurs, which I love but rarely do they understand.

Okay, then how you gonna market this? I’m gonna make an Instagram. You’re gonna make an Instagram and what’s gonna go on it? Did you even read the rules? There’s only three rules on Instagram. It’s complete ignorance in this industry when it comes to marketing and it’s a race to the bottom.

Honey Smith Walls
The way people are marketing I feel that pain I seriously I do. I feel like a clown on social media most of the time, although often I try not to say anything negative about myself. But yeah, I’m just… I feel inept, really is what I meant to say. Because I don’t do that right. I don’t have the knowledge of social media in order to do what I’m trying to accomplish. I need you darling. See is what I’m saying. So tell tell everybody, what you would do for their company. If they were to come to you. And and you look at them and say, Oh, you need me to do blabbity blabbity blah.

Amy Donohue Media Maestro 8:36
I say that all day long.

Honey Smith Walls 8:40
Hey, my friends. I want to give you a tip about a neurologist. I know and trust. Dr. Anthony Mazo is a highly rated specialist here in Melbourne, Florida. One of the first physicians to research and study cannabis since 2016 when it was legalized in Florida.

Dr Mazo is not quick to prescribe traditional synthetic chemicals when he knows that this gentle live Plant Therapy will likely give needed relief. I know this to be true because I had to see him for my own old lady neuropathy issues. He did not prescribe the usual stuff. He told me to go get a particular kind of cannabis instead and use it in a very specific way to find relief. And that is what every doctor in America should have in their little black bag. His clinic details will be in my show notes for you. Why? Because he’s a trusted cannabis expert in the field of neurology right here in Melbourne. Dr. Anthony Mazo at the Brevard Neuro Center on Nasa Boulevard. See his details in my show notes.

Amy Donohue Media Maestro 9:53
Even the biggest MSOs here are completely missing the point… so I once I did a lot….

Honey Smith Walls
Oh what’s an MSO?

A multi state operator where you can really truly believe anything that goes into multiple state operator. On Twitter, hashtag MSO Gang, is where you can see actual owners interacting with their community on Twitter with that hashtag. So what I do is… I will do assessments and audits on social media. I will give lessons… I can do hourly consulting to teach people what they’re actually supposed to be doing and how they have to have a strong backbone because I tell them what’s wrong with it as well. I was a high school Spanish teacher and there is no class harder to teach to teenagers because they don’t want to be there. They just need it to graduate.

Amy Donohue Media Maestro 10:53
So I think outside the box and I think outside the Zuckerberg box. I rarely do Facebook and Instagram for clients. Because we should not be supporting something that has cost 1000s probably millions of dollars for small business owners for every time they shut down an account without cause. I had one account shut down, got it back the next day, because I’m compliant and I read the rules, but I had one account shut down. I was completely compliant. They just pick and choose… your competition can report you and they’re reactive so they don’t even look to see if you were compliant. They just take it down instantly. So that’s how much money out the door for that company that day. So I don’t use too much of anything Zuckerberg.

Amy Donohue Media Maestro 11:41
I double my price for it because there’s a lot more research on Shadow bands and hashtags and things like that. That goes into it. The problem is with our culture right now everybody’s addicted to Facebook and Instagram and they don’t know that there’s other stuff out there so I have to try and pull people away. From that and explain why and why their hashtags aren’t working and things like that. So I do the hourly thing. And then I do full social media management with a strategy. I use analytics every month to post at the right time on the right networks. I understand etiquette because I actually use every network. I’ve been on Reddit for, I don’t know 12 years now.

Amy Donohue Media Maestro 12:21
Twitter I’ve been on since 2008. So when you’re hiring someone, you need to make sure that they know and use all the networks… not that they have 10,000 followers on Instagram… that doesn’t mean that they can do a social media strategy and content calendar for a b2b company that shouldn’t even be on Instagram. So it’s a lot of education. Management is expensive. My pricing starts at $2,000 a month, because that’s what I deserve. I’ve been doing this for 16 years. So my knowledge in cannabis… there are not that many people who understand Cannabis Social Media like I do.
My hourly rates… and I do a 90 day build up. That’s a lot more cost effective for startups. But as a woman in this industry, I have to lead by example and that is charging what I’m worth, because I have had people say to me, well, we’ll give you $250 a month. $250 a month to work your Instagram that takes two hours a day every day. So you’re actually paying me five cents an hour with 16 years of experience. Go fuck yourself. And that’s only one account. That’s one account… when you showed me yours. I was like holy shit. So I’m gonna help you streamline because you do not have to be everywhere if you don’t have the time to be there.

If you can’t work a Twitter account every week, get rid of it… because people know when you’re not there. If your Facebook page has no likes, on your posts, get rid of it. You do not have to be there because I have people say oops Facebook… we have to be… no you don’t have to do anything!

Amy Donohue Media Maestro 13:57
Every business is different on where they should be. I am shocked when I have a cannabis company come to me and they don’t even have a LinkedIn company page. Everybody’s on LinkedIn. Business owners are not on Instagram and Facebook but they are in cannabis on LinkedIn. And I see that. I love that tribe. So it’s a great one and that’s where you can interact with you know CEOs. The people who have been around for ever interact with everybody on there. There’s no snobbery and the same with Twitter. They’re very active on Twitter, and it just blows my mind when when people are like, Oh, we’re on Facebook and Instagram.

Unknown 14:44
And there’s a period there.

Unknown 14:48
I mean, I think Facebook would be great if you had a private group. Do not put cannabis or Canna or leaf or anything. Branding is much more sophisticated in this industry. Now we don’t have to do that anymore. So if you have a private Facebook group called grandma’s knitting corner, it doesn’t matter… tell your people how to find you.

Unknown 15:11
But you can’t search for anything Canna on Facebook. There are MSOs I can’t find on Facebook because I can’t search for them. So it punishes brands so much on there, which is why I steer people away. But you wouldn’t know that if you didn’t really know how to use social media. If you’re a small business owner and you don’t know how to use social media. If you think it’s just a post, then you shouldn’t be there. Right? You have to have a strategy just like you have to have a business strategy and a business plan. You have to have that for social media as well. It’s so difficult to know which ones to pick and choose though and to know and to understand what your presence needs to look like how it needs to be formed and all of that I can just tell already. I’m passionate about it too, because I like things to be done the right way.

My bills are paid by cannabis. So I have to know how all of this works. Because I get I’d say 15% of my income every month is cleanup work. Cleanup work from, “Oh, we hired my millennial nephew because he grew up with a phone in his hand”.

Amy Donohue Media Maestro 16:18
A content calendar is even so people get hired, I will lose opportunities because of my age, even though my experience is greater than finger quoting competition because I don’t think I have competition. I don’t think anybody does. There’s enough business for everybody in this industry. Yes, I agree. Totally. I don’t like the word competition.
Well, and I don’t like to compete.

Honey Smith Walls
I never have. I’ve never been a competitive. I just don’t have a competitive bone in my body.

Amy Donohue Media Maestro
I’m super competitive.

Honey Smith Walls
I’m not at all. I just want everybody to love me and so I just tried to be sweet and

Amy Donohue Media Maestro 17:03
I’m sweet but there’s an edge to my sweetness. It’s like eating one of those dried mangoes with the chili powder. That’s me. Oh, very spicy. Very spicy and sweet and a little bit of two.

Honey Smith Walls
Oh wow. I’ve never heard of such thing. I’ve got a mango grown outside my window.

Amy Donohue Media Maestro 17:23
You know it’s because I live here. In Arizona. We have such a Mexican influence on our food. And one of the things on the west coast that is super popular is dried mango and then they take chili powder, a little bit of cayenne powder a little bit of sugar and then like citric acid for the tartness and then they just coat it and oh my god, it is so good. I am totally going to look up some of those recipes. I’m going to send it to you. Thank you sounds divine. Really? Yeah. And it’s not a consistency like gummies you know it’s got that that chew to it. And I really liked that.

I was just exasperated last year and pulled off the last great big mango… they were almost the size of a small football. I peeled them and got seed out of them and kind of just you know there was some messy in the juice and all that but all that meat of the mango and I just threw it in a great big bunch of gallon ziplock bags. I had several of them and put them in the freezer. And then every time I’d have a martini I’d chisel some of that….. Oh crap, I just totally lost my my train of thought what I was gonna say…

Unknown 18:45
But yeah, oh, mango. Also if there’s a day where you need that THC and everything else to hit you a little harder… If you eat mango because of the myrcene, you will actually feel the effects much more and I would tell your listeners to use that with caution. Because I was put on my ass a couple of weeks ago for eating some mango afterwards. I’ve been smoking pot since 1987.

Unknown 19:11
And it still affected me like that. So I tell my friends and they’re like, Man, this is even helping my headache today. It goes mango. Yeah, it pays to know your terpenes. It pays to know your terpenes… it’s true.

Unknown 19:31
