Intro

Honey Smith Walls 0:00

Welcome to season three of the Cannaba Verum podcast, the cannabis truth podcast. I speak the language of cannabis freely and uncensored while educating my audience on safe use of this live plant therapy. You should know what’s in your cannabis. What’s good and what’s not. It does not come with an FDA stamp of approval yet.

Using cannabis mindfully as medication is a different concept in Western healthcare philosophy, specifically the past 100 years. There’s a lot to learn and reconsider. The information you’ll find here comes straight from the scientists and clinicians doing the work and reporting their findings in real time through various live online outlets. The scientific truth of cannabis is finally getting out and is wide open for all to see at respected medical sites like www.pubmed.gov and JAMA, the Journal of American Medical Association (jamanetwork.com).

I’m right there in the thick of it with all those titans of medicine as a fly on the wall. Because I’m not a doctor. I didn’t go to med school. I did take dozens of private cannabis courses offered by cannabis expert scientists online over the past few years and slowly began to see and understand the bigger picture.

Well, I can talk to people all day long about cannabis… and hopefully inspire them to research the facts as we know them today.

Cannabis is an amazing alternative in health remedies that can reportedly alleviate typical disease problems and troubling side effects caused by synthetic prescriptions. This is Honey Smith Walls, a 21st century cannabis shaman… not a doctor… not a scientist. Raised by nuns and wolves in the verdant cattle pastures of the Oklahoma oil fields. I’m here to amplify the truth of this great big story and language of cannabis in historical, political and scientific terms… so you can make educated decisions about the medicine you choose to ingest.

Jordan Erskine  0:22

Hello Honey, how are you?

Honey Smith Walls 0:24

I’m just fine. How are you doing Jordan?

Jordan Erskine  0:27

Good. I’m here with Gavin as well.

Gavin Collier 0:29

Hi.

Honey Smith Walls 0:29

Wonderful. Hi, Gavin. Pleasure to meet you. I’m delighted that you could spend a little time with us. Won’t you please introduce yourselves for my audience and tell them what we’re going to be talking about today. I’m so tickled…

Jordan Erskine  0:45

Definitely. So my name is Jordan Erskine. I’m one of the co founders of a company called Dynamic Blending. Which is a full turnkey contract manufacturer, skincare cosmetics, hair care, oral care, some dietary supplements and you know other products like that as well as CBD products, which is what we will be talking about.

Honey Smith Walls

Wonderful.

Gavin Collier  1:09

I’m Gavin Collier. I’m the other co founder with Jordan. We started Dynamic Blending. I have a background in the sciences, life sciences and then also in the law. I’ve been here with Jordan ever since the beginning and happy to discuss this topic with you.

Honey Smith Walls 1:23

I’m down here in Melbourne, Florida, and my whole life has been turned around because I’ve been able to use medical cannabis. And when that happened, I I really had a need to help everybody else figure out how to do it. Because it’s a whole different ball of wax as a patient, than the whole recreational bunch… and God love a good high, you know, but when I’m trying to help my own or relieve my own issues, it’s difficult to know who to trust.

And so I fell into the science geeky kind of category and started hanging out with all that whole tribe on LinkedIn, which is how I, you and I met so I’ve just been an armchair scientist, if you will, I do not have a medical background at all. But I’ve certainly been studying this plant in the compounds within for the last six years. So there’s a lot of science going on and there’s a lot to discover and gazillion compounds. What are you guys doing to figure all this out and make products for your clients?

Jordan Erskine  2:51

You know, we have very good suppliers of CBD and CBG and CBN you know all the different cannabinoids, suppliers that we trust that we’ve audited, you know, meet all the standards of our testing.

You know, all of our raw materials obviously are tested so all of the CBD is tested for purity when it comes into our manufacturing facility. So you know the quality and purity really starts at your supplier selection for us, you know, and then and then from there… You can kind of trickle down into using those suppliers in your r&d you know your research and development your new products, because you trust the quality and trust that supplier really, you know.

Honey Smith Walls 3:36

If your potential client or somehow in my audience, what would the rest of the audience want to know about your help for them? I don’t understand your world at all. I’m not where you guys are… I’m just a consumer and an educator of certain items. But, you know, I have no idea what you are, how you all came to do what you do. And I just like to simplify it for those people in my audience who are kind of like me…clueless about it. You’re you’ve got people who come to you to bring a product already. Is that what you’re saying?

Gavin Collier  4:19

Well, so this is Gavin talking. So a little bit of background about what we actually do here at Dynamic…

Honey Smith Walls

Thank you! Educate us!

Gavin Collier 4:23

So we educate clients and can take a concept… so maybe one of your listeners has an idea for a product. Maybe they want to make some sort of cream or some sort of high end skincare type product or you know, they they want to maybe use it in some product they’ve thought of…

And so what they could do is… they could come to us and here at Dynamic Blending we would be able to take that idea, we could develop it into an actual product in the r&d laboratory. We would then be able to send samples to the customer and they’d be able to look at it… give us feedback. We could make alterations to those formulations. And then but once approved, we could actually then manufacture in house in our facility and then it’s ready for them to actually sell it to their consumers. So we can we can do that situation. Or we could take somebody else’s formula and then mass produce it as well. So we have all kinds of different experts that work within Dynamic that are able to help that potential customer or a potential new brand get their product. That’s kind of what we do.

And we saw a big, big opportunity with with CBD in general. And we were probably one of the first manufacturers to really start jumping into that and we got all the appropriate certifications through our local government.

Honey Smith Walls

But where are you?

Gavin Collier

So we’re located in Utah and we’re a processor facility. So we’re able to manufacture products, we’re able to incorporate CBD type ingredients into actual finished good products. And then we can do that for your customers.

Honey Smith Walls 6:23

Would you tell me…. I’m just really, I’m a real political junkie. And so I’m just really curious about how all of that legislation went through for you and what have you said you’re a lawyer too. Is that you Gavin?

Gavin Collier

Yeah. Unfortunately.

Honey Smith Walls

Well, but I’ll bet it helped you, you know, wade through all of that nightmare.

Jordan Erskine  6:43

Well, yeah, definitely. And so, you know, just a little bit additional background from Jordan and I, we actually have experience developing a brand that we actually later then sold. And so my my primary role was looking at that law, where it was, what was legal and what wasn’t legal, and then essentially riding the wave… we were easily, probably one of the very first brands that went massive commercial, but we were able to do that just because we were paying attention to what was going on in the law in Utah.

They kind of developed a lot of the similar practices as what like the USDA would do. And we actually had a role in helping them kind of find what they were actually looking for. Because when Utah started trying to roll out their their CBD programs and things… here in the state of Utah, they didn’t really know like, well, you know, really understand this industry the way we did.

So as they came through our facility and then audited our facility, they started asking questions, and we gave them answers and then they actually kind of developed their program with a lot of our input.

So it’s been a team effort I would say. Our head of Quality continues to work with the state on those issues. So…

Honey Smith Walls 8:12

It’s so nice to hear… in an era of, you know, legislative double-back somersaults… it’s just ridiculous for what companies and individuals have to go through. I’m so glad to hear in Utah, it hasn’t been that difficult for you and that you’ve been able to lead as well. Were you instrumental in helping the “ASTI”… the standardization organization?

Jordan Erskine  8:40

So we really brought quality standards and quality critical requirements. Yes. The Government… we kind of taught them what they should be looking for when they’re approving new customer products or new brands.

What labeling should or shouldn’t be allowed. What review process should happen or shouldn’t happen. Because when we set up Dynamic Blending, we set our facility up with the quality system that would meet the standard of a full drug manufacturing facility. So like, if we’re making actual pharmaceutical medications… that’s what our facility was set up to do, potentially. We’re not currently doing those… but we do over the counter drugs.

Honey Smith Walls 9:30

I’ll bet your lab is a delight.

Jordan Erskine  9:33

Heh heh… yeah… So when they came to our lab… what we wanted to make sure Utah understood was that there were certain things they should be looking at to make sure that people consumers aren’t being ripped off… that they’re actually getting the product and the dosing and all that correctly.

And we’ve kind of led the way… We have brands that reach out to us and their math is completely wrong. What they thought they should be putting into their product in order to dose…was wrong… and so we’ve been really trying to help brands with that.

Honey Smith Walls 10:08

Oh my gosh, what a helpful resource that is for those people. Dosing is a nightmare for everybody. For sure, so try to put it in the package and get it all out there consistently.

Dr. Mazo Commercial

By Honey Smith Walls

Hey, my friends, I want to give you a tip about a neurologist I know and trust.

Dr. Anthony Mazo is a highly rated specialist here in Melbourne, Florida.

One of the first physicians to research and study cannabis since 2016 when it was legalized in Florida, Dr. Mazo is not quick to prescribe traditional synthetic chemicals when he knows that this gentle live plant therapy will likely give the needed relief.

I know this to be true because I had to see him for my own old lady neuropathy issues. He did not prescribe the usual synthetic stuff. He told me to go get a particular kind of cannabis instead… and use it in a specific way to find relief.

And that is what every doctor in America should have in their little black bag.

His clinic details will be in my show notes for you. Why? Because he’s a trusted cannabis expert in the field of neurology. Dr.Anthony Mazo, a great friend to all of us.

In Melbourne, FL at the Brevard Neuro Center.

Honey Smith Walls

Are you just working in hemp products, or are you also working in full spectrum for your clients?

Jordan Erskine  11:21

Yeah, so we work in some full spectrum. But we do have to fall between that or under that point three. We’re not you know, we’re not DEA licensed or anything like that yet, even though we are a processor facility, so, you know, we would still have to jump through those hoops. But for the most part, you know, most states obviously that’s a requirement as well. As to keep it under that point. 3% limit because they’re going off of the 2018 Farm Bill.

Honey Smith Walls 11:48

Yeah all that’s gonna change though… Are you gonna…Do you think you’ll start doing that for clients?

Jordan Erskine  11:55

Yeah. We’ll be able to start doing that, you know, we’ll still follow all the proper regulatory hurdles and legal guidelines we need to… just because we don’t want to put our facility in jeopardy for our other clients.

Honey Smith Walls 12:12

Of course. That makes sense. I’m just sitting here just amazed at your website it’s glorious. It really is. One facility in Utah? Or do you have other labs in other states?

Jordan Erskine  12:26

So we just have the one in Utah, but we’ve grown basically from where me Gavin started in my basement many many years ago.

Honey Smith Walls

I love hearing that.

Jordan Erskine

We were a formulation, consultancy group, you know, we were just developing formulas and selling them to brands and things like that, and quickly realized, you know, we need to we need to do the whole process. We need to do all the manufacturing because all the manufacturers out there were garbage and had really high MOQs and all this stuff, so they made it really hard to work with. There was a million reasons. So, so we jumped into it. And you know, we started in my basement and now we’re in 138,000 square feet across our building.

Honey Smith Walls 13:06

Oh my gosh! Congratulations! Gentlemen, it’s seriously a wonderful, wonderful business of course, being able to help other people but I know you started before hemp came into being but yet still so glorious that you could jump in to this industry as well and begin the healing with people. Is there anything else that you’d like to tell our audience about your company and maybe entice people to come visit your website?

Jordan Erskine  13:36

You know, we pride ourselves on the simplicity of how we make the complicated contract manufacturing process simple. And so you know, like you’ve seen our website is a great resource, but we’re really talking to our team and figuring out you know, if you really do want to do a product and just seeing everything we have to offer, I mean, you know, we have a 6000 square foot r&d lab with multiple talented cosmetic chemists. We have you know, we have a talented marketing team that we’ve actually, we’ve actually broke broken off into it’s own creative agencies all under a different company, because they’re so talented, they can go off and do you know, cosmetic branding and rebranding for skincare brands, CBD brands, you know, even in the dietary supplement world.

So, one thing we are really good at is finding talent, putting the right people in the right seats on the bus.

Honey Smith Walls 14:31

Who are the right people at your company tell us because no really because, you know, my audience is maybe looking…. for sure. We’re the right people for your company?

Gavin Collier  14:44

Yeah, I think for us, like when when we’re looking for people to hire, obviously, we’re looking for just the competency there. And I think some organizations are just… they don’t know what they don’t know. They don’t know what competency looks like. And so I think people realize it once they meet you. And we’re, the culture of our company is very fun. And people like like working here. I think we have a 98% retention rate.

Honey Smith Walls 15:17

Oh my goodness, congratulations.

Gavin Collier  15:19

So we make a plan for for me and Jordan. I mean, we’re not the types of owners that are trying to drain the business and, you know, just live our lives. We we’ve rolled everything back into the company for years and years now. So we were really looking to better the lives of our customers and our employees. So that’s kind of our goal.

And also something important to know about Jordan is, you know, we have some street cred I would say in the cannabis industry. We actually created a brand that we sold to Young Living the nature’s Ultra brand that Jordan and I and two other partners actually created that brand… and that was that was the one we sold. And I mean, it’s an amazing brand. But you know, that’s kind of the quality of stuff we develop here as we try to develop very high end, but actually accurate stuff.

Early on we had some suppliers who tried to pull some shenanigans and send isolate that had been cut with powdered sugar.

Honey Smith Walls

Sucking air…

Gavin Collier

And, you know, for somebody that doesn’t understand the chemistry… that would have gotten them and that really affects a lot of companies and their ability to dose properly.

And there are bad actors out there unfortunately, but yeah we made a particular formulation and you know, that the isolate that we we purchased should have been soluble in the carrier oil we had selected and there was residue, so there shouldn’t be residue.

And so we looked down deeper into it and it was sugar…  powdered sugar. And so a gummy distributors would never know. It would have been mixed in and so it’s an important part of our process before an ingredient ever gets to the production area where it’s actually going to be mixed and then filled into a product… we test and we verify that it is what we actually purchased. So a lot of brands unfortunately still don’t do that. You know, they’re not getting what they paid for it and neither are their customers.

Honey Smith Walls 17:39

So… well… This is exactly what I preach. My whole soapbox is about looking for the COA and my audience knows what that means. So, you know, being sick from contaminated cannabis is what got me into cannabis. Because I finally figured it out, you know, smoking the same shit off the street from the same guy for three years. That was brick cannabis. You know what I’m talking about? Mostly seeds and stems. Raw as hell and I mean you know, make your throat raw as hell… that sort of stuff, until my body said… “You’re going to die if you don’t do something.” Really, that’s what got me into cannabis and figuring it out.

So you know, I started going to schools… went to Dr. Dustin Sulak’s, Healer school and all of that, taking courses and following along for years and years. And now I just get to hang out with you guys and have fun and Chitty chat about all these these amazing compounds that we’re finding out about.

I’m so thrilled that your standards are so high and that your teaching standards. It’s so important. And you guys are my heroes. I’m gonna pass your name around a little bit now. No, seriously, I will… I’m grateful that you could come on to the show. Explain to my audience what your world is like… because we all live in our little bubbles down here in Florida.

And so, thank you so much for explaining what you do for us, and I’m sure their sons and daughters and grandkids already have big ideas about maybe giving you some communications about their own ideas.

Thank you again, gentlemen. It’s been a pleasure speaking with you and I wish you the very best of luck. Will you come back and visit Cannaba Verum next time you have a great big break on some big fascinating news that we’ll want to hear about?

Gavin Collier

Of Course.

Honey Smith Walls

That’s great. All right. Well, have a happy day. Thank you again, and we’ll talk to you soon.

Jordan Erskine  20:03

All right, thank you. Take care.

Jordan Erskine  20:05

Bye bye.

FINI:

You’ve been listening to another Cannaba Verum podcast with 21st century cannabis shaman Honey Smith Walls about the importance of using verifiably safe products. The process of getting a diagnosis from your family doctor and taking your records to a cannabis specialist can lead you to the correct cannabinoid therapy for those issues. Otherwise, you’re just your own guinea pig looking for answers without any foundational knowledge or ability to determine the best choices or strategies.

Cannaba Verum is Latin for Cannabis Truth. Sourcing factual information about cannabis hasn’t always been easy for a variety of reasons. However now because of modern innovations, it is. My sources are from leaders in cannabis science like:

Roger Adams, U.S. Organic Chemist who isolated the structure of CBD,

Raphael Mechoulam, Israeli Organic Chemist who isolated the structure of THC,

Ethan Russo, Dir R&D International Cannabis and Cannabinoids Institute

Dustin Sulak, DO – my favorite doctor at healer.com, teaching the art of Cannabis Healing to the world, and other industry greats like:

Rev. Dr. Kymron DeCesare, Ed Rosenthal, Jack Herer, Michael Backes, and Michael Pollen and so many more… plus I use classical sites like: PubMed.gov, JAMAnetwork.com, ResearchGate.com. I listen to several daily podcasts to keep up with the latest cannabis news across the nation and throughout the world like: Dr. Codi Peterson et al on The Cannigma Podcast,  MJTodayDaily.com and MarijuanaMoment.net.  I trust the CBDProject.org and CannabisScienceTech.com. I watch the National Cannabis Industry Association (NCIA) at: thecannabisindustry.org and many more like: NCIA’s Cannabis Industry VOICE (CannabisRadio.com)

Over past episodes of Cannaba Verum, we’ve listened to some amazing scientists and medical professionals talk about their discoveries and patient successes as hundreds of questionable compounds rise to the public grasp. I am especially interested in the pharmacists movement becoming an integral part of this new medicinal choice.

Watch this machine roll into action through conversations with pharmacy doctors all over the nation like Dr. Leah Johnson and Dr. Codi Peterson out West and Dr. Alan Ao up North. There are so many more getting involved now… these are just a few who have come on my show to explain the situation and it’s fascinating.

You’ll find citations available on my podcast blog at cannabaverum.com

PS: Helping society get past the fear of using cannabis will be a lifelong journey for me. This industry is just opening up and most patients and doctors are seriously cannabis naive and need help understanding where to turn for trustworthy information.

If you need help opening that cannabis discussion with your family doctor,  please reach out and grab the Dear Doctor Letter I wrote for this exact purpose. It will explain your decision to try cannabis and ask for their help in monitoring your labs and progress. It will also show them where they can find medical research on the subject of your diagnosis and the effects of cannabis.
